Byzantine Kataphractoi by klmsilgi Byzantine Kataphractoi by klmsilgi

Byzantine Heavy Cavalry of 11 - 15 century
alternative : [link]
The Kataphractoi trace their origins back to Roman times and are normally recruited from amongst the middle classes, providing the Byzantine army with a force of well trained and well disciplined cavalry units. Well protected and armed with a lance and a mace and although somewhat outdated by modern heavy cavalry, they still make for formidable fighters on the battlefield.

Were the initial origins of cataphracts Sarmatian and/or Parthian? Home grown Roman cavalry was poor in quality. Nice job!

Much of it was because the West Romans never used cavalry much. East Rome, once it had been split from the West, slowly became more and more cavalry-based, taking from the multiple cultures nearby them that were so. East Roman cavalry, once they began Easternizing, became a force to be reckoned with over time.

It may not be true to say this faction has the patent of the cataphracts class.

But with high possibility, they had come from east Anatolia, maybe west khazars.

The common area of the 3 faction that we mentioned Trosky17. Although Eastern Roma had been a great empire, they were special for their disciplined infantry troops.

Wait you to make another discussion.

I should try and study the topic more closely. My comment was conjecture based on some facts.
